Nokia's 2011 Smartphones Have Built-In Wireless Payment Tech: Take That, Apple!

Speaking at the Moby Forum, a Nokia spokesman has confirmed that every Nokia smartphone from 2011 will have near field comms built in--the tech that makes wireless credit card payments work. NFC technology permits extremely short-range wireless data transfers to take place, which makes things like contactless subway fares, concert tickets, merchandise, or the Visa-based contractless credit card system work. It's a move to keep relevant in the face of Apple's advances in contactless payment systems.
Nokia's VP for Markets, Anssi Vanjoki, wouldn't reveal much. The smartphones will support the Single Wire Protocol and MicroSD security and possibly a Nokia security unit too. Single Wire Protocol is a new standard that defines how near field comm technology in a cell phone integrates with the SIM card inside cellphones. This integration provides a basic level of user-ID security in any wireless interactions that occur.
Nokia may simply be responding to a 2008 call from the GSM Association that mobile phone makers build full NFC powers into phones from the middle of 2009--which, frankly, hasn't happened. But this doesn't detract from the boldness of this news. Until now the technology has been little exploited outside of these simple uses, but the fact that it's relatively secure, fast and can actually share a sizable chunk of data when you swipe one NFC device over another means it has almost limitless applications when connected to as sophisticated a device as a smartphone.
Meanwhile, Apple's been filing patent after patent for years relating to novel uses for NFC technology from smart concert tickets, to how intelligent shopping baskets would use the tech in stores, to reinventing the ATM with NFC identification via an iPhone. In fact so many Apple patents have been popping up with NFC in them somewhere that when the first teardowns of the iPhone 4 arrived, it was surprising not to see a telltale flat spiral wire NFC antenna anywhere in sight. In light of this Nokia news, Apple's now very likely to include NFC as a killer iPhone 5 feature.
What does this news mean for you? If you're a Nokia fan then you can expect some novel systems popping up (probably more in Europe than the U.S., given Nokia's history) that use NFC for payments in stores, vending machines and so on. The entire tech may in fact get a boost, and become more visible to the man in the street, simply thanks to the volume of devices Nokia sells. And we can also expect a number of high-profile lawsuits to hit, if Nokia--desperately trying to vamp-up its ailing smartphone business--infringes on anything Apple's patented.BY Kit Eaton

The display of this Samsung measures 3 inches in diagonal and it comes with 262K color support and a 240 x 400 pixel resolution. The touch screen is very resistant and it is also easy to use. You also get a set of physical buttons like the Send key, the Back and Clear buttons, the End and the Power buttons. On the left spine you will find the volume rocker plus the screen lock key and the charger jack. The right side is host to the microSD card slot, a speakerphone key, the voice command key, and the camera button. On the back of the phone you can find the camera lens plus the self portrait mirror.

Aside from other Samsung cell phones that have onscreen QWERTY keyboards, the Samsung Reality comes with a full physical QWERTY keyboard that has 4 rows and it feels very pleasant to the touch. The keyboard is spacious and it has a dedicated number row and even the shift and function keys. Using the A, W, S and D button plus the arrow keys are suitable for moments when you want to play games. Whenever you slide the phone open, the screen changes its orientation from portrait to landscape mode so you can start using the QWERTY keyboard. The Samsung Reality cell phone has an address book that can store 1000 contacts and for each of these contacts you can save up to 5 numbers, 2 e-mail addresses, 2 street addresses and even an instant messaging screen name.

It comes with features like autoshot mode, a night shot mode, five white balance presets, five color effects, adjustable ISO and options for adjusting the brightness, the contrast and even the sharpness. The photo quality is average and you can even use the camera to record some videos. Audio quality is above average and with the included headphones jack you can attach you own pair of ear buds. Battery life is very important but it is never good enough on a smart phone which is packed with a lot of high end technology features. Even so, you must be able to rely on your Samsung cell phone so the battery does not die in your moment of need. The battery of the Samsung Reality manages to keep the cell phone on for about 5 hours of talk time and approximately 12 days in standby mode.Samsung B3310 Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera - International Version with No Warranty (Titan Gray)Samsung Glyde U940 Cell Phone Touchscreen Cell phone for Verizon Wireless with No Contract - Refurbished in Brand New Housing and 30 Day Seller's WarrantySamsung GTC3300KEUBK Champ Star Mini Unlocked GSM Phone with Camera, Touch Screen, Bluetooth, and Micro SD Memory Card Slot--International Version with No US Warranty (Black)Samsung Star GT-S5230 Unlocked PhoneFull Touch Screen Quad Band GSM Bluetooth, 3.2 MP Camera, Voice Record, MP3, MP4 Speaker Phone--U.S. Version with 1 Year Warranty (Black)Samsung SGH a177 - Cellular phone - GSM - bar - QWERTY - black - AT&TSamsung F480 Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen, 5 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, and MicroSD Slot--International Version with No Warranty (Coral Pink)Samsung B2100 Unlocked Quad-Band Phone, Extreme Anti-Shock, Waterproof, Built-in Flashlight, Bluetooth--International version with warranty (Black)Mirror-like LCD Screen Protector for Samsung Impression SGH-A877 Cell Phone

Nokia Booklet 3G Mini Laptop ReviewNokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3G (Black)Nokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3G (Black)
Nokia has just whipped the dust sheet off the Nokia Booklet 3G. A brand new breed of portable device for Nokia, this mini laptop PC sees the company step foot on freshly cut turf, and we’re a little dumb-struck with excitement at the prospect of the experience that this bite-size Booklet promises to deliver when it arrives. Not to mention what it means bigger picture, and how this product could affect the entire mobile landscape for the better (we’ll save that for another story), but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.

First, let’s get down off our tip-toes, take a deep breath, and soak up all the initial details on what the upcoming Nokia Booklet 3G mini laptop is set to deliver when it lands on laps. Read on for every shred of info currently available on this landmark new product, and get the first close-up look at the Nokia Booklet 3G mini laptop in our photo gallery.

The new Nokia Booklet 3G will be a Windows-based machine, supported by an efficient Intel Atom processor that promises the performance of a full-function PC. It’s efficiency credentials are boldly punctuated with battery life that stretches up to 12 hours (with normal daily use, of course – don’t expect a 12-hour Quake-fest off a single hit of juice).

Turning our attention to mini matters of a tape-measure nature, the Nokia Booklet 3G comes toting a glass 10.1-inch HD display (it has an HDMI port for HD video out). This lives within its smart aluminium shell which measures in at just 2cm thin and tips the scales at around a kilogram to ensure it’s extremely portable.

Connecting at speed is crucial with a product of this nature, so the Booklet 3G has been designed with fast downloading and uploading front of mind – it’s 3G/HSPA ready for rapid mobile broadband anywhere-access on the move. Wi-Fi has also been wedged into it’s slim body. Plus, it supports hot-swappable SIM card functionality.

It’s talents don’t end there, with Nokia’s mini laptop PC also featuring onboard assisted-GPS with Ovi Maps neatly sat in the passenger seat. There’s a single front-facing camera nestled above the 10.1-inch HD screen for video chat, with Bluetooth and a built-in SD card reader also making appearances.

You may be wondering why Nokia is adding to its range of products with an ultra portable laptop PC? Well, Nokia’s Executive Vice President for Devices, Kai Oistamo, summed it up simply as follows:

“A growing number of people want the computing power of a PC with the full benefits of mobility. We are in the business of connecting people and the Nokia Booklet 3G is a natural evolution for us. Nokia has a long and rich heritage in mobility and with the outstanding battery life, premium design and all day, always on connectivity, we will create something quite compelling. In doing so we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful and more personal.”

There’s already a lot of info to digest here, but there are still more details to come at Nokia World 09 on 2 September – expect official word on where the Nokia Booklet 3G will be available, news on how much it’ll cost, along with a detailed list of specs for the number-hungry among us.

In the meantime, share your opinions on the new Nokia Booklet 3G in the comments section below, and be sure to follow all our coverage of Nokia World 09 right here on Conversations
